Invisalign is a custom made removable orthodontic appliance offered as an alternative to more traditional orthodontic solutions
. A type of clear tooth aligner, it is made of plastic and looks similar to a teeth-whitening tray. Invisalign is designed for people who find the thought of a mouthful of metal braces and brackets – however effective – too unattractive to commit to. Invisalign consists of clear aligners that move your teeth little by little using controlled force. Only certain teeth are moved at a time. Each aligner is used for about two weeks at a time, until you achieve your perfect smile. Your dentist will create an individualized treatment plan using 3-D computer technology. The average treatment time is about one year, though some cases are much less.
Invisalign is presently approved for adults and teenagers with completely erupted permanent teeth who can faithfully follow the directions for treatment – how long they have to wear the aligners each day, what they can and cannot eat and drink, seeing their dentist for follow-up appointments, etc. If you do not follow treatment recommendations, you may compromise the treatment success.
